New structure to reflect strategic focus: CEO appointments

14 July 2020

Imperial is pleased to announce the following appointments on a group Executive Management level.

CEO: Market Access

Effective July 2020, Johan Truter will take on the role of CEO: Market Access. Integral to our ‘Gateway to Africa’ strategy, our market access solutions see us taking ownership of inventory and responsibility for the full order to cash function. We build complex route to market solutions that provide our principals’ access to consumers through comprehensive channel strategies that integrate sourcing, sales, distribution and marketing. Our solutions also create opportunities to leverage our freight and contract logistics capabilities.

The market access business currently operates across various regions in Africa, with plans to further expand into additional regions including South Africa and the Middle East. Our activities currently focus on two key and defensive industries - healthcare and consumer. Johan will lead our plans to expand our market access footprint and grow our expertise across regions and into other key industries in time. He will also drive differentiation for Imperial in this space by leveraging technology and data and offering value added services to principals - unlocking operational efficiencies and new revenue streams across the value chain.

Johan’s extensive experience in navigating the complex African continent - and proven success in developing and implementing market access solutions - sees him well placed as a strategic partner to multinational clients wanting to enter and grow in emerging economies.

CEO: Logistics Africa

Effective July 2020, Edwin Hewitt will hold the position of CEO: Logistics Africa - encompassing road freight, contract logistics and LLP in Africa. Logistics will continue to play an integral role in achieving our ‘Gateway to Africa’ and ‘One Imperial’ strategic imperatives, leveraging cross-selling and upselling opportunities with our market access business. We will continue to move from asset heavy industries to asset light - with Edwin leading our ventures into new industries such as retail and e-commerce. Edwin has an exceptional reputation for translating strategy into operational excellence and for simplifying organisational complexity. He has previously led companies such as DAWN and Capital Africa Steel in his capacity as chief executive officer, and also served as the chief restructuring officer of PPC and group executive director of Murray & Roberts.

CEO: Logistics International

Effective July 2020, Hakan Bicil will be our CEO: Logistics International - encompassing road freight, contract logistics, air/ocean and LLP outside Africa. Hakan will continue to be responsible for our contract logistics and freight businesses in Europe and the United Kingdom. In this role, Hakan will also leverage existing client, principal and customer relationships for revenue growth.

Hakan has extensive experience in international logistics and will bring his formidable skill and insight to bear in this new role. Previously chief commercial officer at CEVA Logistics, he also held senior management positions at Panalpina, the TOLL Group and Kuehne & Nagel.

We wish Johan, Edwin and Hakan every success with their new strategic focus areas and roles.
